In early 2012 there was a group of Australian Labradoodle breeders who were committed to breed development of the Australian Labradoodle, but had been orphaned from all other Australian Labradoodle breed associations because their dogs carried the latest infusion (Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier)
An application was submitted to an obscure all breeds registry in Australia called Master Dog Breeders and Associates. The application was accepted on the condition that the name of the breed was changed to Australian Cobberdog from Australian Labradoodle, due to all the confusion surrounding Labradoodle breed development. The name was changed to Australian Cobberdog and a new fellowship was found for all the breeders breeding high quality Australian Labradoodles, previously unable to unite because of the Irish Wheaten genes in their dogs.
The MDBA now lists Australian Cobberdog breeders, and the breed is gaining popularity with over two hundred breeders around the world. Australian Cobberdog breeders ultimate goal is responsible breed development with high regard to temperament, health, and conformation.
A main objectives of this site is to provide you with a 'view from above' the development of the Labradoodle Group and show how the different types emerging from the initial hybrid Labradoodle is a natural progression in the multi-millennia tradition of dog breeding. To see past the politics and one upmanship so often displayed by breeders biased about the dogs they breed and fancy.
I hope the nomenclature and all the twists and turns in the world of Labradoodles and Cobberdogs will be as fascinating to you as it has been for me. Please enjoy a coffee or tea and stay for a while.
