POODLE

Poodles are the descendants of Germanic and French water dog ancestors, and a foundation breed of Labradoodles.

  • Poodles rank the most intelligent dog breed after Border Collies.
  • Most are energetic, and very social, requiring both physical and intellectual activities.
  • Pudelhund, the original German term for the breed literally means "dog that splashes in water."
  • Poodles have contributed to other breeds such as Miniature Schnauzer, Standard Schnauzer, and Bichon.
  • Poodles are currently experiencing a revival in their original purpose as water (gun) dogs, after a long period as companion and show dogs.
  • Prince Rupert of the Rhine had a hunting Poodle that rode with him into battle.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte wrote in his memoirs about a faithful grenadier's pet poodle who stayed with the body of his master at the Battle of Marengo, licking his face and willing him to live again.
